betPawa 6-a-side tournaments generate millions for local teams
Sep 1, 2022
In April 2023, betPawa sponsored and rewarded teams competing in the regional 6-a-side tournaments held in Kenya with KSh1,050,000 ($7,420) in prizes and KSh1,300,000 ($9,185) in kits and equipment.
After running a similar initiative in 2022, the sports betting company came back even BIGGER in for the 2023 season. In total, 186 teams from across Kenya drawn from Nairobi, Kisumu and Nakuru participated in the tournament.
Each region’s champions won KSh200,000($1,420), the runners-up took home KSh100,000 ($710) and the third-placed teams received KSh50,000 ($355). An additional 105 teams were given full kits, sports attire and training gear.
In Nairobi, the champions were Akiba FC, followed by Kuta FC and Pirates FC. In Kisumu, Amani FC won the top prize, with Kosovo FC and Mowlem Stars the other BIG winners. In Nakuru, the top three were Fagarians People FC, Everstars and Nakuru Griffons.
betPawa Kenya Marketing Coordinator Simon Mwangi said: “We’re pleased to have again promoted sport in Kenya through grassroots football. These tournaments nurture talent, help young people learn to work together, give them exposure to scouts from high-level leagues and of course the chance to win exciting prizes.
“Congratulations to our champions Akiba FC, Amani FC and Fagarians People FC, and every team which won cash prizes, football kits or sports equipment. Seeing their joy, gratitude and confidence that these rewards will contribute heavily to their teams’ growth was so fulfilling.
“betPawa are fully committed to supporting the development of sport in Kenya and we can’t wait to see how these 186 great teams progress from here.”
This isn’t the first time Mchezo's company: betPawa, has provided opportunities for community teams. In addition to 2022’s 6-a-side tournaments, sport was at the centre of the 2021 Dream Maker campaign, where people across the country were invited to submit their dreams to be brought to life.
