Mar 20, 2024

In a groundbreaking move set to elevate Uganda's basketball landscape, our brand betPawa, has pledged substantial support to the country's national basketball teams, the Silverbacks (Senior Men) and the Gazelles (Senior Women). This three-year sponsorship deal, valued at UGX 2.6 billion, marks a significant milestone in the sports sector, promising to enhance the teams' performance and visibility both locally and internationally.

Empowering Uganda’s Basketball Talent

The partnership, announced in Kampala on March 20, 2024, encompasses comprehensive financial backing for the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA). This support covers critical aspects such as team training, travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and supplements. By addressing these fundamental needs, betPawa aims to alleviate financial constraints that have previously hindered the teams' progress.

In a statement, Ntoudi Mouyelo, Chief Commercial Officer at betPawa, emphasized the multifaceted nature of this sponsorship. “We are committed to providing the Silverbacks and Gazelles with the resources they need to excel. Our investment goes beyond basic funding; it includes direct player incentives through our Locker Room Bonus initiative, which rewards players UGX 150,000 per match for every win. This is our way of recognizing and boosting their morale for outstanding performances.”

A Historic Partnership and Shared Vision for Success

This sponsorship marks a historic first in East and Central Africa, as noted by FUBA CEO Marcus Kwikiriza. “The Locker Room Bonus is a novel concept in our region, and this sponsorship sets a precedent for private sector involvement in national sports. It’s a significant step forward for basketball in Uganda.”

The initiative has garnered praise from various quarters, including the Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, who highlighted the critical role of private sector support in sports development. “This collaboration is a testament to the potential of private partnerships in addressing the challenges facing our sports teams. We hope to see more companies follow betPawa’s lead in supporting sports in Uganda.”

Looking to the Future.

Albert Ahabwe, the national team manager, expressed optimism about the teams' future with betPawa's backing. “With this sponsorship, we are poised to prepare better and compete more effectively on the continental stage. Our aim is to dominate African basketball, and with the right preparation, we are confident we can achieve this.”

betPawa's Chief Commercial Officer, Ntoudi Mouyelo, highlighted the strategic timing of the sponsorship, given the increasing global interest in African basketball. “The Basketball Africa League has put a spotlight on the continent, and we see this partnership as an opportunity to showcase Ugandan talent to top clubs worldwide. Our support will help the Silverbacks and Gazelles gain the exposure they need to advance their careers.”
